Once again, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a stern warning regarding the Teesta River water distribution. Her recent comments have left everyone astonished. West Bengal has been heated for several days due to the issue of the North Bengal division. Recently, Union Minister Sukanta Bhattacharya approached the Prime Minister, demanding the unification of North Bengal with North East India. In response, the ruling Trinamool Congress has labeled the minister’s actions as divisive. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself has spoken out against it.
Chief Minister’s Warning
Standing in the Legislative Assembly, Mamata Banerjee warned against the division of Bengal. She stated, “The BJP resorts to divisive politics as elections approach. Various conspiracies are underway regarding division. The BJP government has forgotten everything.” Subsequently, Mamata Banerjee raised her voice in the Legislative Assembly about the Teesta water distribution issue.
Major Statement on Teesta Water
The Chief Minister directly attacked the BJP regarding the unilateral water distribution agreement. She said, “If we give Teesta’s water, there will be a water crisis in Bengal. For the sake of North Bengal’s interests, giving Teesta’s water is impossible.” She complained that there is no water in Teesta due to the dam in Sikkim. Recently, various issues have strained the relationship between the Center and Bengal, with Teesta water distribution being one of the major ones. Yesterday, Monday’s Legislative Assembly session became significant politically and administratively. A proposal for the formation of an Indo-Bhutan Joint River Commission was discussed. Mamata emphasized the importance of forming this commission to protect North Bengal’s settlements, agricultural lands, and forests.
On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in the Legislative Assembly that her government opposes any agreement between Bangladesh and India regarding the distribution of Teesta River water. According to her, “We love Bangladesh. But there isn’t enough water in the Teesta River to share with Bangladesh. The people of North Bengal will not have drinking water.” Last June, the Chief Minister wrote to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that no discussion on Teesta River water distribution and the Farakka Agreement with Bangladesh should take place without the intervention of the West Bengal government. In the Legislative Assembly, Mamata Banerjee informed that recently in Delhi, she demanded the formation of an India-Bhutan River Commission at the NITI Aayog meeting.
