GANGTOK, Sikkim, 08th March – A swift police operation led to the arrest of three women from West Bengal on Tuesday afternoon, accused of orchestrating a jewellery theft in Gangtok. The suspects were intercepted at the Atal Setu Checkpost while fleeing toward Siliguri, ending a hours-long search triggered by social media alerts.
Authorities escalated surveillance at key checkposts after details of the theft circulated widely online. By 3:45 PM, personnel at Atal Setu flagged a vehicle (WB 75C 4575) driven by Kolkata resident Manik Mandal. Inside were the alleged perpetrators: Tapasi Das (wife of Depankar Das), Marjina Bibi (wife of Abul Ali), and Shokarazan Bibi (wife of Robiun Mondal), all Kolkata natives. The trio, suspected of stealing jewellery from an undisclosed Gangtok store, were detained for questioning.

“The coordinated response between Rangpo and Atal Setu checkposts was critical,” stated a police official, noting heightened vigilance along escape routes. While the stolen items’ value remains undisclosed, sources confirm recovery of jewellery from the vehicle.
The theft gained traction after locals shared CCTV footage on social media, prompting rapid police mobilization. Rangpo Checkpost, a key entry-exit point, had been placed on high alert earlier in the day.
Investigators are examining the suspects’ ties to previous thefts and potential accomplices. Mandal, the driver, is also under scrutiny for his alleged role in the getaway. Legal proceedings under relevant IPC sections are underway, with charges expected within 48 hours.
This incident highlights growing concerns over inter-state theft networks targeting Himalayan tourist hubs. Gangtok, a popular destination, has seen increased police patrols since 2023 following sporadic theft reports.
Authorities urge businesses to enhance security and report suspicious activity promptly. Further updates will follow as the probe unfolds.
