Kolkata, 15th Feb 2025: The Indian Railways is examining proposals to introduce late-night train services from Siliguri, North Bengal, to Kolkata, addressing long-standing demands for improved connectivity after 10 PM. This move follows appeals by Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2025, highlighting gaps in current schedules that leave passengers without viable nighttime travel options.
Currently, key trains like the Darjeeling Mail and Padatik Express depart Siliguri Junction (NJP) for Kolkata’s Sealdah Station by 8 PM. Commuters, particularly business travelers, healthcare workers, and students, have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of post-10 PM services, forcing many to rely on road transport or delay travel plans. MLA Ghosh emphasized this issue during his meeting with the Railway Minister, advocating for a dedicated night train departing NJP after 10:30 PM to bridge the connectivity gap between North and South Bengal.
In a letter dated March 2024, the Railway Ministry confirmed it is “examining all necessary aspects” of the proposal, including operational feasibility, track availability, and passenger demand. Ghosh stated, “The Honorable Railway Minister acknowledged the urgency of this matter. A night train would not only ease travel but also boost economic ties between regions.”
Broader Connectivity Proposals
Ghosh’s appeals extended beyond nighttime services. His five-point agenda included:
- Night Train Service: One-night train should be added from NJP (Siliguri) to Sealdah Station (Kolkata) after 10.30 pm.
- South India Route: A direct train from Cooch Behar/Alipurduar to Kolkata, extending to southern states like Tamil Nadu or Karnataka.
- Siliguri-Patna Link: A new route connecting Siliguri to Bihar’s capital, catering to migrant workers and students.
- Vande Bharat Sleeper Coaches: Upgrading existing trains with modern sleeper amenities for enhanced comfort.
- Metro/Monorail Network: A 25-km urban transit system from Siliguri to Kharibari to reduce traffic congestion.
While the Ministry has not yet committed to these additional proposals, the night train demand has gained traction. Railway officials are analyzing footfall data from existing routes, such as the Darjeeling Mail’s average occupancy of 85% and Padatik Express’s 78%, to gauge potential demand for late services.
Local Reactions and Challenges
Daily commuters like Aniket Roy, a Kolkata-based entrepreneur, welcomed the move: “Returning after evening meetings in Siliguri means staying overnight or taking risky road journeys. A 10:30 PM train would be transformative.” However, logistical hurdles remain, including crew scheduling, maintenance slots, and ensuring safety on stretches like the congested Howrah-New Jalpaiguri line.
The Railway Board is expected to finalize its assessment by June 2025. If approved, the new service could commence by late 2025, aligning with infrastructure upgrades under the ₹1.2 lakh crore Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor project, which aims to decongest passenger routes.
For now, North Bengal’s travelers await a decision that could redefine regional connectivity—and their nightly commute.
