Darjeeling, 13th February: In a significant push to bolster infrastructure and connectivity in the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars regions, Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista met with Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways Nitin Gadkari today. The discussions centered on accelerating key infrastructure projects aimed at addressing long-standing challenges of accessibility, traffic congestion, and economic growth in the region.
During the meeting, Bista highlighted the urgent need for an alternative highway connecting Darjeeling to Siliguri via Balason and Ghoom. This proposed route is expected to provide a safer and more efficient travel option, alleviating congestion on existing roads. The new highway would also enhance connectivity to crucial locations such as Kurseong, Mirik, Sonada, Rangbull, and Sukhia Pokhari, significantly improving travel for residents and tourists alike.
Another critical proposal discussed was the Siliguri Ring Road, a project designed to decongest Siliguri City and streamline transportation for both daily commuters and commercial activities. The ring road is anticipated to ease traffic bottlenecks and support the growing economic activities in the region.
Bista also proposed a new highway linking Darjeeling to Teesta via Lebong and Dabai Pani. This route would serve as an alternative pathway, facilitating regional trade and boosting tourism by providing better access to scenic and economically significant areas.
In addition to new road projects, Bista emphasized the need to upgrade National Highway 55. He urged for its maintenance to be transferred to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to ensure timely upgrades and better upkeep. Furthermore, he advocated for the construction of a new bridge alongside the historic Coronation Bridge to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and enhance road safety.
Beyond road infrastructure, Bista proposed several ropeway projects under the Parvatmala scheme, aimed at providing sustainable transport solutions and improving accessibility to remote areas. Key proposals included ropeway connections between Bijanbari and Darjeeling town, Lebong and Chowrasta, and Mineral Spring and Teesta. These projects are expected to reduce travel time, support tourism, and stimulate local economies.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari responded positively to the proposals, assuring Bista that the projects would be prioritized. Gadkari directed officials to expedite the necessary processes to move these initiatives forward. Bista expressed his gratitude, stating that the completion of these projects would significantly enhance the quality of life for residents, create economic opportunities, and transform connectivity in Darjeeling and its surrounding areas.
The meeting marks a pivotal step toward addressing the region’s infrastructure challenges, with the potential to unlock new opportunities for growth and development in the Darjeeling hills and beyond.
