Kalimpong Tensions Rise After Attempted Sexual Assault on Minor Sparks Backlash

Kalimpong 27th August: Kalimpong is witnessing heightened tensions following a disturbing incident involving an attempted sexual assault on a minor girl. The incident occurred when the girl went to purchase chips and was allegedly targeted by Mohammad Irfan Azharuddin, who reportedly tried to close the shutter of his shop to trap the victim. Fortunately, she managed to escape, crying for help.

In response, local residents promptly filed a police complaint leading to the arrest of the accused. The situation escalated when Mohammad Sultan, the elder brother of the accused, allegedly assaulted Nima Tshering Bhutia, a respected local social worker and, ex-army personnel, blaming him for his brother’s arrest.

Local residents are now demanding strict legal action against both the accused and his elder brother. Kalimpong Superintendent of Police confirmed the incident, stating, “A case has been initiated under the POCSO Act, and the accused has been arrested and presented in court.” The case is registered as Kalimpong Women PS case no. 15/24.
