Kalimpong, 17th August: In a powerful display of solidarity, thousands of Kalimpong residents, including students, politicians, shop vendors, medical professionals, and people from all walks of life, took to the streets on Saturday, demanding justice for a young doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last Thursday.
The rally, which began at the local police station, wound through the entire town, drawing support from passersby who joined the march. Participants emphasized the urgency of addressing women’s safety, with banners calling for justice and harsher penalties for the perpetrator.
The community’s anguish and anger were palpable as chants of “We want justice” and “Balatkari lai fasi dew” echoed through the streets. A public speaker at the rally urged reflection on societal values and expressed deep sorrow for the victim’s family, stressing the need for collective action to prevent such tragedies.
