Jalpaiguri, 08th August: The Border Security Force (BSF) halted hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals attempting to enter India at the international border in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. The group, fleeing what they described as “attacks” in their home country, was stopped near Dakshin Berubari village, close to the Jhaportala border outpost.
A BSF official confirmed that although the border was fully sealed, preventing entry, the Bangladeshi nationals were later handed back to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The individuals came from five villages in Bangladesh’s Panchagarh district, bordering Jalpaiguri.
Local residents witnessed the desperate pleas of those stranded at the border, recounting harrowing tales of violence and turmoil in Bangladesh. The situation in the neighboring country has escalated sharply, following weeks of student-led protests over job quotas, which ultimately led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and flight from the country.
