Sikkim: The death toll in the Wayanad landslide disaster reached 70 on Tuesday 30th of July, with several people still reported missing. Officials confirmed that hundreds of injured individuals have been admitted to various hospitals. The worst-affected areas include Churalpara, Velarimala, Mundakayil, and Pothukalu. Survivors from these areas are devastated by the calamity.
Bhavya, the principal of VHSE School in Velarimala, has been attempting to contact her students. She has managed to reach 560 students, but 22 remain unaccounted for. Mundakayil has also been severely impacted, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) commencing search operations amidst widespread destruction.
The Army, NDRF, Fire Force, Police, and volunteers from nearby areas are involved in what is being, described as the state’s largest rescue operation. However, heavy rain and inclement weather are hindering efforts.
The landslides were reported around 2 a.m., on the 30th of July 2024 adding urgency to the ongoing rescue missions.
