Om Prakash Mathur, a veteran BJP leader from Rajasthan, has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim. Mr. Mathur, a national vice-president of the BJP and a former RSS pracharak, has announced his retirement from active politics following his appointment to the Constitutional post.
At 72, Mr. Mathur brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Hailing from Bali in Rajasthan’s Pali district, he has served as the BJP’s state president and as a Rajya Sabha MP. He was groomed by former Vice President and BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and has also been the general secretary in charge of Gujarat BJP. Known for his organizational skills and strategic acumen, Mr. Mathur played a significant role in the BJP’s return to power in Chhattisgarh last year.
In his political career, Mr. Mathur has been considered a key strategist and was once seen as a potential Chief Minister candidate in Rajasthan before the party chose Bhajanlal Sharma for the position.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma congratulated Mr. Mathur on his new role, stating, “I firmly believe your able guidance and leadership will put Sikkim on the path of good governance and set new standards.”
As Mr. Mathur assumes his duties in Sikkim, the outgoing Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed as the Governor of Assam. Additionally, Mr. Acharya will hold the additional charge of Manipur.
