Darjeeling, West Bengal: A 48-year-old man, Dipanjan Mitra, was arrested on October 17 for allegedly sending bomb threat emails, claiming that hydrogen-based Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) had been planted at three prestigious colleges in Bengaluru. The investigation began after the principal of the Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT) reported receiving a threat from the email address “s_ve_sekr@hotmail.com” on October 4, leading to the immediate evacuation of students and staff.

On the same day, BMS College of Engineering reported a similar threat. The police formed a special team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lokesh Baramappa Jagalasar, which traced the emails to Mitra. During interrogation, he confessed to sending the threats and revealed his involvement in at least 10 other similar incidents.

An HP laptop and a Nokia mobile phone used in the crime were seized, and further investigations are ongoing. Bengaluru colleges, including BIT, BMS, and MS Ramaiah College, were placed on high alert following the threats.
